Clutter Free Friday!!

Last week we took on those kitchen drawers, this week we will tackle the toy closet. I don't know about you, but the closet in my Boys room was always disorganized and messy, until I decided to implement a little organization. So, how do you get it all cleaned up?

The first thing to do is pull out all of those toys. Go through and take out all of the broken ones, and all of the ones they no longer play with. Throw out the broken things and donate or sell the items that are no longer used. Once you have those out of the way, separate the remaining toys into groups, for example; legos, cars, dolls, books, puzzles, train sets, etc. Once you see how many groups you have, you know how many containers you will need.

We had two really large groups, tools and building blocks, so I bought two of the large see through storage containers. Once all of those were placed in the proper bin, I took a look at the small stuff. We had several books, so I bought a dish pan, and stood all of the books up so that the children can flip through them to select the one they want. This seems to work better for us than a traditional book shelf because the children can see what the titles of the books are.

We also had several small cars, and screws and bolts that go along with the tools, but seem to get lost at the bottom of the large container. To contain these, I bought a few of the small clear storage containers to house these groups. Ta Da, there was finally some organization in what seemed like a hopeless cause.

The best part about this system is that the children can take out only what they want to play with, and put it back when they are finished. It also makes putting the toys away easier for the children since they can see where everything goes.

Do you have any tips to share on how you organize your toy closet? If so,leave a comment and share it with everyone.

Brandy - My first visit here - your blog design is really cute. When my boys were younger that's how I did it. Just grouped like toys in plastic boxes - clear is good so they can see what's there. Pick up is fast and they can do it themselves. I used to rotate which things were more accessible - lots of times after not seeing a toy for a few months, they treated it like it was brand new. Happy blogging and homemaking!
