Parent Question!!

Have you heard of Ebeanstalk? Ebeanstalk is a great site full of information for parents about child development. It is also full of developmental toys for children. This is one of the questions they tackle on the site:

From the site:

Why Does My 2-year-old Tantrum Soooo Much?
By: Gopi Patel, MSE.d Special Educator

Parents should always remember that tantrums are a behavior children learn. Attention is usually given to them when they don't get their own way. Children usually very quickly learn that crying, yelling, screaming, kicking, laying on the floor and generally acting-out can help them get what they want. As long as the child gets what he wants tantrums will continue and worsen over time.

It has been my experience that all children go through some form of tantrum, or at least my children did. It can be a very frustrating time for both parents and children. I have tried many different responses, and it seems that each child is different. What works with one child, doesn't necessarily work with the next. One method that seemed to work with two of my children was to diffuse the tantrum with humor.

The best advise that I have for parents is to hang in there. This phase will end eventually.

Have you found a solution that works well for tantrums? If so, please leave a comment and share your solution.
