Frugal Friday

Frugal Friday Apple Baby Food Recipe. I found this recipe on the Wholesome Baby Food
website. They have lots of great baby food recipes there.

Apples/Applesauce (Use Gala, Braeburn, Rome or Macs) (4)6 months+
Vitamins: A, C, Folate
Minerals: Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium

This recipe is written so that you may use any amount of apples you wish! We recommend Fuji, Gala, Braeburn or Macintosh

1. Peel, core and cut apple into slices/chunks
2. Place slices or chunks into a pan with just enough water to slightly cover apples
3. Boil/steam until tender; be sure to check on the water level and stir, That's It! Easy Peasy!

Apples may be mashed with a potato masher to achieve a smooth applesauce consistency. If your masher will not achieve a puree type of consistency, then follow steps 5 - 7

5. Reserve any left over water to use for thinning out the apples
6. Place into your choice of appliance for pureeing and begin pureeing.
7. Add the reserved water as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin puree
8. Add cereal (if desired) to thicken up the
Ask your pediatrician about adding some cinnamon for new tastes!

If your baby is constipated, you might also use the juice that is leftover from the cooking to mix into cereals, or with water in a bottle or sippy cup.

I think we will try avocado next. I have never tried Avocado with my other children, so if anyone has any experience with it, I would love to hear about it.

My kids LOVE avacado even though I don't. I just mash it a little with a fork or cut it into cubes for my son. It was both of their first foods (2 and 7 months) it has wonderful fats and lots of nutrients. I recommend it!

Avacados are pretty pricy. Apples, hwoever, can be really inexpensive, expecialy if you grow your own or your neighbor grew more than they needed.

I run the cooked apples through the blender to make applesauce. I can it in jelly jars (half pint size) or smaller (quarter pint) for baby food. This way, it's ready and done all year.

When pears go on sale, I can pears for the baby. This year I got pears at 50 cents a pound and made baby food. You can see pictures of my food on my site here: http://theprudenthomemaker.com/babyfood.aspx
