More Frugal Baby Food Ideas!!


This week I tried making summer squash baby food, and it turned out well. The little one loved it, and it was super easy to make. Take 5 or 6 yellow summer squash, cut off the ends and quarter them. Put them in a big pot with water, and boil until tender. Drain well, these things hold a lot of water. Remove the seeds (I used my finger to rake the seeds out). To remove the skin what I found worked the best was to take a spoon, hold the squash with the flesh side facing you, and run the spoon down between the flesh and the skin. It gets all the super good veggies out, and leaves the skin for you to discard.
It is recommended that you remove the skin for younger babies (mine is 6 months old) because it harder for their tummies to digest at this age.
Next, pop it in the food processor for a couple of seconds until it reaches the desired consistency. There you have it, homemade baby food.

**Note, squash holds a lot of water, so you probably will not need to add any milk to thin it out.**

To store it, I used the ice tray method. Fill up the ice cube tray with the baby food and let it freeze until solid. Remove the cubes from the tray and place in a zip lock bag labeled with the date and contents.

I make most of my baby's food too! My peanut is 10 1/2 months now and hasn't rejected a single thing I've made her - although I have discovered it's harder to feed her Gerber and other pre-packaged type foods once she's had the good, fresh stuff! My favorite website is wholesomebabyfood.com and our latest recipe was for a apricot chicken with brown rice. I won't type it out since your baby girl probably isn't ready for that just yet, but you'll find it at that site.

I've done alot of the baby food for my little one as well. I actually have a steamer, so I steam all the vegetables. I have done acorn, butternut, and calabaza squash. We have apples, pears, and peaches at home as well. For a little later we have green beans, peas, and blueberries. I found the easy thing to freeze the food is the really flexible "rubber" type cake pans. I have a mini-muffin that fits exactly one ounce of food. It's extremely easy to get the frozen food out becuase it is so flexible you can "peel" it out. I have broken a few ice trays so this seems perfect for now.
