Free Home School Activity!!

As you can probably imagine, we go through a lot of food here in my house, which means a lot of boxes. So, I decided to save all of those boxes for a couple of weeks. I stacked them in the laundry room, and as crazy as this may sound, there is a reason to my madness.

I have two little boys who love to build with everything, so I thought this would be a good, fun way to let them be creative in school time.

So yesterday, everyone got their chance to build whatever they wanted. We had all kinds of creations, from robot suits to battle ships. It really is amazing to see what they can come up with with something as simple as a few boxes!!

Here are some pictures of the fun, and it went on for a while, until the boxes started to break down.  You will notice that some of the children have their PJ's on, sometimes we stay in the for a while, (I know, shame shame).

Green Tip, Egg Cartons!!

Okay, so most of us have them, right? I know we go through tons of eggs at our house. So, what do you do with all of those egg cartons??

We have started using some of our empty egg cartons as seed starter pots. Fill them with a little soil and plant your seed. I use an empty Agave bottle to water them, since it is easy to control how fast and how much water comes out.

Here is a picture of my lettuce seeds that I planted about four days ago.

So, there you have it!!  Yet another way to reuse and recycle, while attempting to become a little more self sufficient.

Green Tip, Using Newspaper!!

What can you do with newspaper?? Tons of things, but I chose to make flower pots for my brusselsprouts. I saw this great idea over at Bonzai Aphrodite, she has tons of great Green tips.

I took my stack of newspaper from last week and got busy.  I had 26 burussel sprout, sprouts that needed to be transferred to larger containers, but are not yet ready for the heat of the south, so I made us some planters.  They were actually pretty easy, although I did have to use a piece of tape on the bottom of my pots.

To water them I am using an empty Agave container, and it seems to be working well.  They look a little sad in the picture, but I had just transferred them.  They have since perked up and are doing well!!

How Green Are You??

So, I have been reading tons of really good blogs and books lately about being "green", more healthy, and becoming more self sufficient. All in all, I like the idea of being able to produce my own food, and make some of the things that our family needs, such as clothes and things of that nature.

I know that many people live in small spaces, and do not have space for a large garden. There are also some really busy people out there who would like to be more "green", but think they do not have time.

Well, you do not have to let those reasons stop you. There are tons of things that you can do that do not require a lot of space or time.   For instance, I used to have a lovely square foot garden, that I enjoyed ever so much.  I no longer have the room for a square foot garden, but I am making the most of what I have.  In our current house we have flower beds, that were filled with pine straw when we moved in.  So, I moved the straw to make several little beds, and planted different vegetable plants in each bed.  So, far they are doing well.  I have also taken advantage of all of the flower pots that I have to plant vegetables.

We have also recycled a few two liter drink bottles and milk cartons as planters as well.  It is so funny, because today when my oldest daughter and I were out, we stopped at the store and I bought her a juice.  When we got home and she finished it, she brought me the bottle and told me that maybe I should use it to grow some brussel sprouts in.  It is so funny, when you don't think they are listening to anything you say, you find out that they are actually taking EVERYTHING in, words and actions!!

So, in honor of my new found passion, I will be sharing more tips on how you too can become more green and frugal, all at the same time!!
